Divine Dessert Recipes: The Fondant Fancy

Known to some as a French Fancy, but to us British as Fondant Fancy, the iced sponge cake is a divine dessert that many of us have "fond" memories of. What are they, where do they come from, and can I make them at home - are perhaps the questions at the forefront of your mind right now?

What are they and where do they come from?

Dessert

Fondant Fancies were originally produced in the UK by the beloved Mr Kipling. They are incredibly sweet, consisting of a single cube of sponge cake, topped with butter cream, and coated in fondant icing, with chocolate or another colour of icing drizzled on top.

Divine Dessert Recipes: The Fondant Fancy

Can I make one now?

Sure, the process is quite long but the results are absolutely worth it. Gather together the following ingredients:

For the cakes:

- 175g unsalted butter

- 150g plain caster sugar

- 3 eggs

- 175g plain flour

- 1 teaspoon baking powder

For the fondant icing:

- 25g unsalted butter

- 100g dark chocolate

- 90g icing sugar

- 100ml boiling water

- 75g mascarpone cheese

- 75g melted white chocolate to decorate the fancies

Preparation:

Preheat the oven to 140C or gas mark 1. Grease up a 9 inch square cake tin.

Using an electric whisk, mix together the butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually add the eggs, whisking continuously, and only add each one as soon as the last one has been fully mixed in. Fold in the flour and baking powder lastly.

Throw the mixture into the baking tin and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes. When done, set aside to cool and cut into 1 inch cubes.

Whiel you're waiting for that, boil a pan half full of water and leave to simmer. Suspend a heatproof mixing bowl on the pan (not allowing the base to touch the water), and add the dark chocolate, butter and icing sugar. Stir until nicely smooth. Gradually add the boiling water (you may not need the whole 100ml) until the mixture is runny enough to fall down the sides of the cakes.

Back to the inch square cakes, begin by placing a small lump of mascarpone on the top. Spoon over the icing and set aside for at least 30 minutes to allow the icing to cool and harden.

Finally, drizzle the melted white chocolate on top for effect and allow to cool again.

Filipino Recipes - Suman Moron (Dessert) Recipe - Pinoy Food

Suman Moron originated from Leyte, an island in the Visayas. It is a popular Filipino dessert served during fiestas and other special occasions. Luckily, I don't have to wait for any special celebrations to taste this delicacy because these are commonly sold outside the church during Sundays.

This recipe makes about 30 pieces of Suman Moron 4-inches long each.

Dessert

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups glutinous rice flour
  • 6 cups ordinary rice flour
  • 2 kilos grated coconut meat
  • 1 big can evaporated milk
  • ½ kilo white (refined) granulated sugar
  • 1 kilo muscovado sugar
  • 30 chocolate tableya, melted with 1/4 cup water
  • 1 bar cheddar cheese (julienned)
  • 1 cup chopped peanuts
  • 1 small bottle vanilla extract
  • 8 cups boiling water
  • about 30 pieces banana leaves, cut into rectangles (8″x10″)

Filipino Recipes - Suman Moron (Dessert) Recipe - Pinoy Food

Cooking Instructions:

  • In a basin, place the grated coconut meat and pour boiling water. Set aside. (Note: 8 cups of canned coconut milk can be used as alternative.)
  • Mix the 2 types of flour well until thoroughly incorporated. Divide the flour mixture equally into two parts.
  • Squeeze the grated meat when the coconut mixture is already cool enough to handle. Use a fine strainer to separate the coconut milk. Divide the coconut milk equally into two parts.
  • In a thick-bottomed pan, place ½ of the flour mixture and pour in one part coconut milk, muscovado sugar, melted chocolate, vanilla extract and peanuts. Mix well and place over medium heat. Keep on stirring while cooking the mixture. At first, uneven lumps will form. But as you keep stirring, the mixture will even out as it thickens. Turn off the heat when oil starts to come out. Set aside to cool.
  • To the second half of flour mixture, add the remaining coconut milk. Then pour about half of the white sugar and the evaporated milk. Mix thoroughly. Place in a separate pan and cook over medium heat while stirring continuously. Remove from the heat when the mixture is thickened. Set aside to cool.
  • Pass the banana leaves over the heat to make them supple. Then use the squeezed-dry coconut meat over the leaves.
  • Take a heaping tablespoonful of the first mixture (chocolate) and place on the banana leaf wrapper. Sprinkle a little cheese on it before rolling, with the banana leaf covering the mixture. Therefore, you hands won't be touching the mixture being rolled.
  • Take another heaping tablespoonful of the second mixture (milk) and do the same process.
  • Place the two cylinders (milk and chocolate) and roll to form a thicker cylinder with the two colors fused together.
  • Roll the banana leaf to wrap tightly and tie a string at both ends to secure.
  • Repeat the process until all of the two mixtures have been wrapped.
  • Steam for about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Let cool before serving.

Easy Dessert Recipes With Few Ingredients

This is a great dessert recipe to make quickly and easily with leftover double chocolate cookies. Naturally, you'll need to make the cookies first, and then manage to hold off eating enough of them to turn them into a dessert...

Easy cookie recipe

Dessert

To make simple double-choc cookies, you will need:

  • 1.5 cups chocolate chips (or a bar of chocolate smashed to pieces with a rolling pin)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • One third of a cup of cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence (optional - it's nice but not critical if you don't have any)
  • 2 eggs

Easy Dessert Recipes With Few Ingredients

Mix all of the ingredients together, making sure everything is well combined. Pre-heat the oven to 320 degrees. Grease a baking tray, then spoon the cookie mixture onto it.

The cookies should be done within about 15 minutes, but check them at regular intervals and turn the tray if they are cooking unevenly. Once they are done, leave them to cool for a few minutes on the tray and then remove them with a spatula and place them on a rack to cool properly. The cookies will be at their most tasty at this point, warm and slightly soft, with melted chocolate in the middle - perfect with a cup of good coffee.

Easy dessert recipe

If you have a few of these cookies left over, you can make a quick and extremely easy dessert recipe with them. There are many variations on this, so check what you have in the cupboards and fridge. You won't need all of the ingredients here - this is just a suggestion, and you can change it according to taste and availability.

You'll need some or all of the following:

  • Cookies
  • Plain yoghurt
  • Custard
  • Ice cream (any flavor, but vanilla or chocolate is probably best)
  • Mixed berries - these can be bought frozen
  • Cream
  • Chocolate shavings

Start by crumbling the cookies into a small bowl or, better still, the bottom of a wine glass. Heat the berries in a pan or the microwave, and pour them over the cookies while still hot. Spoon yoghurt, custard or ice cream - or any combination of these - over the cookies and berries. Top with cream and chocolate shavings.

This is a really simple but very classy-looking dessert. One of the real attraction is the contrasts: the hot/cold of the berries and the ice cream, the hard chocolate chips and the soft cookie and yoghurt. It's also a great way to use leftovers.

Traditional Cuban Dessert Recipes

If you enjoy South American sweet treats, you will love Cuban dessert recipes. A lot of them are similar to easy Mexican recipes for desserts, which you have perhaps already made at some point. Lots of tropical fruits grow in Cuba, including bananas, mango, soursop, pineapple, tamarinds, coconuts and guava, which means that fruity desserts are especially popular.

Well loved Cuban desserts include rice pudding and merenguitos, which are sweet meringue puffs. Torrejas are like French toast. They are sweet fried bread slices served with syrup and raisins. In Cuba, French toast is served for dessert rather than breakfast. Cubans also like to make cookies and pastries using the locally sourced fresh fruit. Fruit turnovers and parfait desserts are really popular there.

Dessert

Flan, which is also known as creme caramel, is very popular in nearly all Spanish speaking countries, including Cuba and Mexico. This delicious egg custard is flavored with vanilla and has a smooth, silky texture.

Traditional Cuban Dessert Recipes

An Easy Recipe for Boniatillo

This sweet potato pudding is popular during the holidays in Cuba. The pudding is flavored with cinnamon, cream, lime juice, vanilla and more and everybody will love the delicious flavor of this wonderful and traditional Cuban dessert. Chill it for a couple of hours or serve it hot. It tastes great either way! This recipe makes enough to serve four people.

What you will need:

  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 lbs sweet potato
  • 2 limes
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon or grated cinnamon stick
  • Water, as needed
How to make it:

Peel and chop the sweet potato and cover it with water in a pan. Add a teaspoon of salt and boil it for twenty minutes or until tender. Drain the potato and mash it using a fork, blender, or food processor.

Peel the limes and save the fruit for another use. Put the peel in a big pan with the brown sugar, cinnamon stick, and two cups of water. Cook the mixture over a moderate heat until it reaches 250 degrees F, stirring it all the time. You will need a candy thermometer to gauge the temperature.

Take out the peel and cinnamon and turn the heat down to low. Add the mashed sweet potato and keep stirring the mixture until it is smooth. Take it off the heat. Beat the cream, butter, egg yolks, and a pinch of salt until smooth, and then add this to the sweet potato mixture.

Cook it over a low heat for a couple of minutes, then take the pan off the heat and stir in the vanilla. If the mixture is too runny, you can mix a quarter cup of cornstarch with a quarter cup of water and add this. Divide the sweet potato pudding between serving bowls and garnish each one with a little ground cinnamon.

Traditional Cuban Dessert Recipes

If you enjoy Cuban food, you will also enjoy making easy Mexican recipes. South American desserts, and Mexican food desserts especially, feature a wide range of delicious ingredients such as chocolate, fresh fruit and more, and they finish off a meal perfectly.

Strawberry Poke Cake - Your Guests Will Do More Than Poke at This Dish!

If you love strawberry desserts like a strawberry pie jello recipe or plump, juicy strawberries with ice cream, you are going to love strawberry poke cake. A poke cake is made by poking holes in a baked cake and then pouring jello over the cake and allowing it to set.

You can make small holes with a fork or bigger ones with a chopstick. Any flavor of jello is great for making poke cake recipes, although contrasting colors are good so strawberry or raspberry jello would look nice on a white cake and anything would go with a chocolate cake.

Strawberry

Part of the appeal of poke cakes is how great they taste. Not only does the jello give a fruity flavor to the cake but also the whole cake is covered in jello, which gives it a great texture. If you accidentally overcook a cake and it comes out of the oven dry, you can pour jello over it to disguise the fact!

Strawberry Personal Lubricant

Are you looking to make your intimate moments more flavorful? Many couples choose to enhance their intimate moments with flavored personal lube. Remaining well lubricated during sex is important for a pleasant and enjoyable experience. Adding flavored lubricant to the mix stimulates the senses and makes oral pleasures that much more pleasurable. What is the best flavor for edible lubricants?

People Love Strawberry Flavor

Strawberry

The strawberry has been a favorite since ancient times. They were known to exist in Italy since 234 BC. Though wild American Indians were cultivating them in the 1600s, strawberries have been cultivated by settlers since the 1830s. Today, strawberries are one of America's favorite fruits.

Strawberry Personal Lubricant

Strawberry is the Best Edible Lubricant Flavor

How does this famous flavor fare when compared to other fruit flavors for personal lubricant? Strawberry is the most popular flavor by a landslide. In Google, Strawberry flavored personal lubricant has 48% of all searches for specific flavored lubricant. Cherry comes in second at 32%. These two flavors account for four fifths of all specific personal lubricant flavor searches combined.

What is the Best Strawberry Personal Lube?

Strawberry is the number one flavor for sex lube, but which strawberry sex lube is the best? There are several popular manufacturers of personal lubricant that also make flavored edible lubricant. The strongest names in the personal lubricant industry are Astroglide, Doc Johnson, ID Lubricants, System Jo and Wet international. These quality sex lube manufacturers each have excellent strawberry edible lubes.

Astroglide Has the Best Strawberry Lubricant

One of the most popular strawberry flavored lubricants is made from Astroglide. Of all manufacturers, Astroglide has the highest search volume when it comes to Strawberry lubricant. Another indicator of Astroglide's superiority -- it has the most reviews at buzzillions.com (a popular product review website). At buzzillions, Astroglide's strawberry lube has the highest positive reviews. Everyone there says the taste is great. From my personal experience, Astroglide is the winner for water-based edible strawberry flavored sex lubricant.

Are Flavored Lubricants really Edible?

Lubricants that are water-based and flavored are safe to digest in quantities that would be expected from tasting personal lubricant applied before engaging in oral sex. In general, all water-based lubricants are designed from materials that are safe to consume, but when a product is "flavored", it is certainly safe to eat. Do not be afraid if you swallow flavored lubricant during a sexual encounter -- it is perfectly safe.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Strawberry Flavored Sex Lube

Water-based lubricants have advantages over other sex lube types. They are considered safe to consume -- water-based lubricants are the only type of personal lubricant that are made into flavored edible lubricants. Being water-soluble, they are easy to wash. Strawberry flavored lubricants that are water-based can tend to get sticky as the water evaporates. This can be remedied by applying water to the lubricant, or by reapplication of the sex lube. Another disadvantage of water-based lubricants is that, being edible, they sometimes can feed yeast infections. Therefore, do not use them if you have had issues with recurring yeast infection.

Conclusion

Personal lubricant makes sex pleasant and enjoyable. Strawberry sex lube makes oral sex pleasant and enjoyable. If you would like to enhance your intimate time with flavored lubricant, try strawberry flavor! You cannot go wrong with the most popular flavor of sexual lubricant.

Italian Dessert Cannoli Recipe

Cannolis are a great Italian dessert and they were said to have been developed by Sicilians in Palermo, Italy. These fried wafers are filled with a mixture of ricotta, candied fruit, chocolate, and other ingredients, and they are very, very tasty! Sicilians are supposed to have created this great dessert recipe, and I think that they are just delicious. I hope that this recipe is fairly easy to follow. You will need some type of dowel or metal tube that you will use to form out your cannoli shells. If you have a 3 ½ inch in diameter ring or even a 3 inch ring, you will need this to form the shape of your shells, also. You will also need a deep fryer, or a pan that is deep enough for these shells to float in oil.

Ingredients for Cannoli Shells:

Dessert

3 Cups of unsifted flour

Italian Dessert Cannoli Recipe

1/4 Teaspoon of cinnamon

1/2 Teaspoon of salt

3 Tablespoon of granulated sugar

2 eggs

2 Tablespoon of firm butter cut into small cubes

1/4 Cup of a good Marsala wine

1-2 egg whites, whisked slightly

First thing is to sift the flour with salt, cinnamon, and granulated sugar. You will make a well in the center of your sifted flour mixture. In the middle of the well you have made you will add the egg and butter and start mixing with a fork. You will work the egg mixture with the fork from the center out, to incorporate the moist egg with the flour mixture. You will then add your Marsala wine slowly until dough begins to come together like a playdough mixture. You will then start working the dough with your hands to form the dough into a dough ball. You will then cover and let the dough rise for about 10-15 minutes.

If you have a stainless area to work on great, if not you will need a wooden cutting board. You will need to slightly dust the area you plan to work on with a small amount of flour. You will then roll out the dough into 1/4 inch thickness. You will then use your 3 ½ rings and cut the cannoli shell circles. You will then use a rolling pin to roll the circles into oblongs or ovals. You will then take your dowels or tubes and wrap the dough around cannoli forms. You will then whisk your egg white, and seal your dough edges by using a brush or very clean hands if you have no brush. You will then roll up ever so slightly the ends so they will have a very faint lip or ring on the edge of the cooked product.

At some point when you are ready to get your shells into the oil to start cooking them you will heat your oil to around 350 degrees. Once it is at the proper temperature you will begin to fry two, or three at a time in deep hot fat for about 1 minute, or until lightly golden. Remove with tongs to paper towels to drain, you will then let cool for about 30 seconds to one minute and then slip out cannoli form, holding shell carefully so you will not break it. Cool shells before filling. Let them hang out while you will start to make your filling.

Ingredients for the Cannoli filling:

3 lb. ricotta cheese, that has had moisture removed

2 1/2 Cup of confectioners' sugar

1/4 Cup of semi-sweet chocolate pieces or grated sweet chocolate

1/4 Cup candied cherries, finely chopped

1/2 Teaspoon of cinnamon

1/2 Cup of chopped pistachio nuts

Confectioners' sugar to dust each of the finished Cannoli's maybe about 1/2 Cup

First thing you will want to do is take your ricotta and place into cheesecloth and wrap it into a ball and then you will tie a knot in the top part of the ball you have made. You will want to hold over night if possible to drain the water from the ricotta. If you have some way to hang the cheese ball in your refrigerator that would be best. You will need to have a bowl under the cheese to catch all of the moisture that will drain off of the ricotta. The shells that you have made will hole for a couple of days if you want to make these in stages. They are worth the wait, and the time taken to make these little delicacies.

First you will take the drained ricotta and get it into the bowl and work it for a minute or two to get it more pliable. You will gently start to combine the cheese, and the sugar into a mixing bowl, and fold in with a spatula until you obtain a light, airy blend of ingredients. You will start to fold in the minced candied fruit and the chocolate very gently. You will then start to spoon the cheese filling into a pastry bag, or a large Ziploc if you do not have a pastry bag. You will then twist the top into a knot to keep the filling from emerging, and fill each of the Cannoli shells, squirting the filling in from either end.

Once you have all of the shells filled you will dip the ends of the cannoli in the pistachios. You will then arrange all of the Cannolis on a platter, and sprinkle with a little powdered sugar, and they're ready. If you would like to garnish you can save some of the candied cherries and place them on the center of each Cannoli after the powdered sugar has been applied. Then serve, and enjoy.

Myoplex Versus Muscle Milk - Monsters Among Protein Drinks

Bodybuilders and protein drinks go together like peanut butter and jelly, or ham and eggs. There are more protein drink supplements on the market than any other supplement. Protein has been a part of bodybuilding since the early ages of the sport. Milk, eggs, red meat, chicken, tuna fish, and protein powders have been used for a long time. Two of those supplements have gotten a lot of press lately; EAS's Myoplex and CytoSport's Muscle Milk.

These two products are similar in many ways. They are both available in powder and ready-to-drink (RTD) formulas. The also both have a lower calorie, lower fat, "lite" formula. They are protein drinks that can be used as meal replacement drinks, as well. They are designed around easy-to-digest protein formulas. They come in flavor choices like chocolate fudge, strawberry cream, French vanilla and other dessert sounding names.

Strawberry

Myoplex comes in original, lite, and carb-control formulas. Each of these variations is available in powder or ready-to-drink formats. The original formula boasts 42 grams of protein, 22 grams of carbohydrates (with only 1 gram of sugar), only 6 grams of fat (and only 1.5 of those saturated fats), and 300 calories per serving. It contains 35% or more of the daily recommended intake of 22 different vitamins and minerals. It is available in chocolate cream, vanilla cream and strawberry cream for powder flavors, and chocolate fudge, French vanilla, strawberry cream, rich dark chocolate, cookies and cream, and mocha latte in the ready-to-drink formula. The Lite formula has 20 grams of protein, 22 grams of carbohydrates (still only 1 gram of sugar) and only 2 grams of fat, with 180 calories. It increases the vitamin and mineral content to 18 over 50% of the daily recommended intake. The price of Myoplex packets (from the EAS website) is about .00 each, and the RTD shakes are around .16 each for the original formula and .50 per packet and .92 per RTD shake for the Lite. These prices vary substantially by store.

Myoplex Versus Muscle Milk - Monsters Among Protein Drinks

Muscle Milk comes in original and Lite formulas, as well. They are both available in powder and ready to drink formulas. The original Muscle Milk carries 32 grams of protein, 16 grams of carbohydrates (of which 4 are sugar), and 12 grams of fat (6 of these are saturated.) It also has 300 calories per serving and 35% or more of 20 different vitamins and minerals. There are 30 flavors available in the powder formula, including such exotic flavors as Blueberries and Crème, Chocolate Banana Crunch, Crème Brulee, Dulce De Leche, Peach Mangor, Root Beer Float, and many others. The ready-to-drink formula comes in 10 different flavors including Chocolate Malt, Chocolate Mint Chip, Vanilla Crème, Banana Crème, and Mocha Latte, among others. The Lite version has only 195 calories, 25 grams of protein, 11 grams of carbohydrates, and only 6 grams of fat. The price of Muscle Milk is about .22 per packet in the 20 packet box (price from CytoSports website.) The RTD shakes are around .99 list price. The Lite version is about .54 per serving for powder and .00 per shake for RTD. These are list prices and prices may vary greatly between supplement sellers.

When it comes to protein drink supplements, both of these have great potential. The original Myoplex formula has a little more protein and less fat but a few more carbohydrates than the Muscle Milk. This may be an issue during cutting cycles or for a bodybuilder with blood sugar issues. In the Lite formulas Muscle Milk adds a little more protein, half the carbohydrates, but slightly more fat. The calories are very close in both formulas. The price per serving is very similar in each product, as well. Muscle Milk does have a slight edge in reviews for taste and ease of mixture. Overall, the similarities outweigh the differences and both products have great nutrient profiles. Whether looking for a solid protein drink or a meal replacement either choice would be a solid one.

If your daughter is a Strawberry Shortcake fan, you can host a great party by getting the right supplies and preparing appropriate games and activities shown below. These ideas will leave your daughter and her party guests "berry" happy!

*First off, select your colors. Pink, white, and red are great colors for your party.

Strawberry

*For fun invitations, make two sides of a strawberry out of construction paper and fold it in half. Write the information for the party (time, date, etc.) on the inside of the strawberry.

Strawberry Shortcake Party Supplies, Games, and Ideas For Hosting a Spectacular Birthday Party

*When you make your invitations, ask that your guest wear a dress with pink, white, or red in it. This will make a nice photo with your daughter and friends wearing matching Strawberry Shortcake dresses.

*To decorate, use theme balloons to blow up and hang on ceilings and walls. Be sure to include pink and red streamers to "spice" things up! Cut out and color large paper strawberries to brighten your party room!

*Play "Pin the stem on the strawberry." It is played just like "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" except you pin the stem on the strawberry. Use a large piece of poster board or butcher paper to draw a large strawberry. Then cut our a stem to fit and you're ready to play!

*Play "Find the strawberries": Buy strawberry pieces of candy and hide them around the house. Give each child a basket and see how many pieces of candy they can find to fill their baskets!

*Have a strawberry toss. Use pink and red beanbags as the "strawberries" and draw a big green bush on a piece of blank white cardboard. Cut a hole in the middle of the bush. Have the children take turns throwing the beanbags into the bush. The winner is whoever gets the most "strawberries" or beanbags through the bush.

*For game prizes, give your winners (or each guest) a diamond tennis bracelet, a princess crown, metallic heart necklaces or candy necklaces--anything that helps them "dress up" like their favorite characters!

*You can never leave a party without getting a goodies bag. Hand out fun Strawberry Shortcake treat bags filled with: an assortment of candy, Musical Birthday Straws, a Princess Sash, Candy Lipstick, Push Pop Candy and more! Or have a colorful pinata filled with candy and prizes for your guests to take home in their treat bags.

*Turn your birthday sheet cake into a "strawberry land" by making green bushes out of green frosting and putting little red dots on them for the berries. You can also dot the cake with strawberry candy. If you opt for cupcakes, use pink or red icing and put strawberry rings on the top of each one.

*At the beginning or end of the party, give your guests a little party favor like a pack of strawberry seeds, a pair of garden gloves, lip gloss, or some Strawberry Shortcake stickers as a token of thanks for coming.

Incorporating some of these ideas will make your party a success. Have fun!

Book Review - Strawberry Girl

Strawberry Girl by Lois Lenski is one of the classic Newbery Medal Winners. Awarded the medal in 1946, it speaks of a time that was more familiar and current than today. Today this rich novel opens the window into a time few can remember. This is one of many books Lenski wrote with an emphasis on regional stories allowing young readers to get a taste of how American children lived during the early part of the twentieth century.

Strawberry Girl is an interesting read. At first glance the title and the cover picture of a young girl carrying a fruit basket can mislead the reader to expect a cute little story of a young girl who loves strawberries. Conversely, the story is more about clashes and tribulations between farmers and cattlemen along with how they resolved violent conflict than it is picking strawberries.

Strawberry

Strawberry Girl depicts two families, the Boyer's and the Slater's. The Boyer's move from North Carolina to Florida to raise strawberries, sweet potatoes and harvest oranges. The Slater's are cattle people and have lived in central Florida for a long time. They do not believe in putting up fences and they let their cattle roam all over the county even if it means destroying their neighbor's crops. The two families argue through out the entire book. The Slater family thinks the Boyer's are "uppidity" because of the Boyer's successful farming enterprises. The Slater's routine is to sit back and do nothing to improve their way of life.

Book Review - Strawberry Girl

This way of thinking creates hostile actions and feelings between the two families. Violence and drunkenness escalate through out the story. This book may cross the line with many adults when the neighbors begin to kill each others animals in addition to the school teacher getting beat up by the Slater boys. This incident forced the school to close for weeks. Certainly a little discussion with young children may be desired to explain why these incidents happened.

Additionally, Lenski writes in a Florida backwoods dialect typical of the time period which might be too challenging for third and fourth graders to read. I think this story should be read aloud to get the full effect of what the southern dialogue sounded like. For example, talk like

"Ha, ha! Hain't no dog! Hit's a coon." and "will git you yet, jest you wait."

However, I don't believe this book won the Newbery Award for its depiction of aggression. Times were hard in the early 1900's and resolution of conflicts back then is not typical of today. Strawberry Girl explains the day to day activities of the Boyer family. A young reader can learn exactly how to grind sugar cane and pull it for fun afterwards. Also the book explains the details of Florida weather in the spring and summer. Additionally it goes into detail on how to raise strawberries in sandy soil. Part of the charm of this middle grade novel is in describing how the old Florida pioneers did it.

Strawberry Girl is a sharply written novel about harsh times. It accurately describes a true to life pioneer adventure.

History Of The Guava

The early Spanish explorers of the 1500's found Strawberry Guava, 'Acca sellowiana O.,' growing as a native tree in America, where they were firmly established from Mexico southward to Peru. History records that Seminole Indians were growing guava trees in Northern Florida in 1816.

Strawberry Guava, 'Acca sellowiana O.,' can grow into trees 25 feet tall and frequently they are planted by homeowners as a privacy hedge that is easily trimmed or grown as an untrimmed windbreak. The guava tree can be trained to single or multiple trunks by pruning and will grow into an excellent specimen plant that is covered with exotic flowers during late spring. The wood is gray in color, and the grain is very hard and dense. The leaves are small, distinctly colored flat green, making the plants easily recognized at a distance.

Strawberry

The guava tree or shrub is slow growing and requires the planting of two plants for cross-pollination. The tree is cold hardy to 15 degrees Fahrenheit and is salt water tolerant. Bees and hummingbirds visit the red and yellow flowers, and the pollination visits result in a heavy fruit set.

History Of The Guava

The guava fruit is classified as a berry by most botanists, and it occurs in clusters with individual berries in sizes just under one inch. Each guava berry is covered by a rough rind and the pulp inside occurs in colors of white, pink, or red.

The guava tree grows best in partial shade in acidic soils. The plants are virtually disease free, and the fruit is usually harvested by shaking off the mature guavas when the color change occurs, then, they are collected onto sheets or tarps. The fruit will keep well in a refrigerator up to a week and can be peeled and eaten as fresh fruit, as a dessert, or in salads. If the fruit is dipped into diluted lemon juice, the color of the pulp will remain bright.

The fruit is commercially made into puddings, pies, juices, and jellies, and is a rich source of Vitamin A and C, as well as many beneficial minerals. The guava is grown commercially in Florida and California, and in many southern forests the shrub has become naturalized and mistaken as a native historical plant

"Guavaween" is a traditional central Florida event and fund raiser that is held every year to celebrate the advent of the guava corresponding to parades and festivals that are scheduled near Halloween at holidays Ybor City, Florida, an outskirt of Tampa, Florida. This "Guavaween" event is celebrated during the last of October each year.

There are many kinds of guavas; one tropical guava, 'Psidium guajava L.,' is an important crop in Hawaii, with fruit production exceeding 15 million pounds per year. These guava fruits are technically considered to be berries, and the trees grow in the wild on the island of Kuawai as a native plant. Before harvesting, the plants are vigorously pruned, fertilized, and irrigated. Fresh vigorous shoots grow in response to the pruning, and the delicious fruit forms within the flowers that mature on the new wood to form guavas and require about seven months to fully develop.

Most travelers to Florida last century will remember the many tourist stops on U.S. Highway #1 and U.S. 41 that have now been transformed into interstate highways I-1 and I-75. Tourist shops such as "Stuckeys" were loaded with souvenirs such as pecan logs. One of the most memorable items displayed for sale was guava jelly, jam, paste, or any other conceivable product that involved the use of the magical fruit of the guava tree. All these little jars of jelly and other guava products were visually stunning to the eye, revealing their contents in colors of mint green, red, yellow, and blue.

Raspadas - Refreshing Mexican Snow Cones

There are Mexican dessert recipes for all seasons - gooey cinnamon-scented chocolate cakes with hot chocolate sauce to warm you up in the winter and chilled strawberry soup to cool you down in the springtime. If you are looking for something really refreshing for the summer, what about making some Mexican raspadas?

A snow cone, or raspada in Mexican, is a paper cone filled with crushed ice and topped with a flavored syrup. Raspadas, which are also known as piraguas, minutas or granizados, are popular in Texas, California and throughout the southwestern United States, as well as in Mexico.

Strawberry

They are well loved all over South America and different countries have their own ways of serving them. Venezuelan raspadas, for example, are topped with condensed milk. Snow cones are also enjoyed all over Asia. They are a low-cost summertime treat and they are either served in a cup or on a stick.

Raspadas - Refreshing Mexican Snow Cones

Tasty Snow Cone Flavors

Classic Mexican raspada flavors include tamarind, guava, pistachio, cucumber, watermelon, chamoy, picocito and leche. Chamoy is fruit with chili sauce, picocito is chili and lemon and leche is a combination of milk and cinnamon.

If you thought that chili was the last thing that could cool you down on a hot day, you might like to try a chamoy raspada! The chili makes you sweat and this does actually cool you down. Of course, not all raspada syrup recipes contain chili and some are simply fruit-based.

Recipe for Mexican Raspadas

This recipe serves six people and the combination of strawberry and lemon is really refreshing. You can use an ice crusher or ice shaving machine to make the crushed or shaved ice. Alternatively, just drop the ice cubes into a food processor or blender. Not all blenders are capable of crushing ice so check the manufacturer's instructions if you are not sure or just use a rolling pin to crush the ice yourself.

You can vary the ingredients in this Mexican snow cones recipe if you like, swapping the strawberries for raspberries, the lemon juice for lime juice or using another type of fruit. You can also get readymade flavored syrups, which are handy for making snow cones.

What you will need:

  • 10 cups ice cubes
  • 4 cups hulled strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • Fresh mint, to garnish
How to make them:

Puree the strawberries in a food processor or blender, and then transfer the puree to a pan, adding the sugar. Stir it occasionally over a moderate heat until the mixture boils, then stir in the lemon juice and let it cool.

Cover and chill the strawberry mixture for a few hours, then shave or crush the ice and spoon it into chilled bowls or paper cones. Pour the strawberry syrup over the top and garnish with the fresh mint. Serve these raspadas immediately.

Raspadas - Refreshing Mexican Snow Cones

Perhaps you thought that Mexican food was always spicy and perfect to warm you up on a cool winter's day. Of course some Mexican food is spicy but there are also plenty of refreshing authentic Mexican desserts which are perfect to cool you down in the warmer months.
